With a Focus on Green Energy, Puerto Rico Aims to Be Better Than Before

A little less than two years after Hurricane Maria left Puerto Rico crippled and facing a daunting road to recovery, the island has set itself on a bold new path toward the future, one that will radically transform its infrastructure and economy through widespread implementation of renewable energy. At the end of March, Puerto Rico’s legislature courageously passed the Puerto Rico Energy Public Policy Act, known as Senate Bill 1121. The sweeping green new deal calls for the island to be running on 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. It’s the type of measure that some U.S. lawmakers have faced challenges and harsh criticism for even suggesting. But in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory that’s been working tirelessly to pick up the pieces since 2017's natural disaster, the new measure is seen as critical to creating a bigger, bolder and more resilient future for the island.
