Artificial Intelligence in the energy sector: opportunities and challenges

Article | March 25, 2020

AI is certainly the talk about the hour nowadays. In high-tech industry, AI is the one with most potential. But before proceeding and discussing further on this exciting technology, we’d like to first understand what AI means-: As power is being generated from more volatile sources like solar and wind, the requirement is that power generation must react intelligently to consumption (and vice versa). With AI, we can evaluate, analyse and control participants connected to each other via these smart grids. With modern day emphasis on climate changes and increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions, we must find ways to have most of our power generated from renewable resources. The problem with renewable sources of energy are that they are unpredictable, which makes production of energy periodical and sometimes even chaotic. With renewable sources, there can be power outages or too much power generation which needs to be controlled. Smart storage, also known as Intelligent Energy Storage(IES) can effectively handle these disrupt changes in power supply.

3 Ways Energy Storage is Fueling the Renewables Revolution

Article | March 25, 2020

Across our country, there is an increased focus on renewable energy sources to combat the extreme impacts of climate change, and address the problems caused by a growing demand for power from an aging grid. While significant progress has been made through federal and state incentive programs that have helped drive down the costs of deployment, there is still so much to be done to chart a path toward a clean energy future. Accelerating development of solar and wind projects is a key to achieving renewables goals, but this is not enough. Storage solutions must be integrated to ensure renewable projects can deliver power when and where individuals and businesses need it, and minimize, or even eliminate, reliance on fossil fuels.

COVID-19 and its initial impact on the energy sector

Article | March 25, 2020

As we continue to face an unprecedented global health crisis, our Head of Smart Generation Sales, Angus Widdowson looks at the initial impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the UK energy sector. With the UK on lockdown, many businesses closing and the majority of Britain’s workforce now working from home, COVID-19 is causing major economic disruption. It was covered in our Informer newsletter earlier this week that the growth in renewable generation in the UK gives us more resilience to tackle the challenges of COVID-19. Whilst the supply chain currently remains strong, as this pandemic continues, we are likely to see resource strain on operation and maintenance contractors. We expect naturally fuelled (wind, solar and hydro) plants to be more resilient than fuelled plant, given the lower risk to technical outages vs fuelled plant. Also, with renewable sites being dispersed across the country, we expect single point failures to have a lesser impact overall vs large thermal power generation. At this stage it’s unclear to see how COVID-19 will affect the development of new renewable projects but we are likely to see delays in the deployment of new wind and solar projects.

OPTIMIZING COGENERATION POWER PLANTS TO MANAGE RENEWABLE ENERGY EFFICIENTLY AND ECONOMICALLY

Article | March 25, 2020

A cogeneration, or Combined Heat and Power (CHP), plant uses a heat engine or power station to produce electric and thermal energy simultaneously from a single fuel source. A primary benefit of using a cogeneration system is that it can capture thermal energy for heating that is otherwise wasted in a conventional power plant. Utility companies today face the challenge of transitioning to the utilization of renewable energy for both electricity production and district heating systems.
