Elon Musk’s focus on Tesla (TSLA) Model 3 was remarkable in the last few years. The relatively cheaper Tesla version had record sales this year. Now, Musk has shifted his focus to the company’s solar segment. He emphasized Tesla Solar during the third-quarter earnings conference call. Although Tesla’s solar and storage segment forms a tiny portion of the company’s revenues right now, Musk expects it to be even bigger than its EV business in the future. However, will Tesla Solar be as successful as Model 3? The solar and energy storage industry is still in its nascent stage, but it has huge potential globally. Many of us didn’t even think about Model 3’s success a few years ago. However, Model 3 has been successful due to Musk’s vision and Tesla’s innovation skills.

Artificial Intelligence in the energy sector: opportunities and challenges

Article | March 25, 2020

AI is certainly the talk about the hour nowadays. In high-tech industry, AI is the one with most potential. But before proceeding and discussing further on this exciting technology, we’d like to first understand what AI means-: As power is being generated from more volatile sources like solar and wind, the requirement is that power generation must react intelligently to consumption (and vice versa). With AI, we can evaluate, analyse and control participants connected to each other via these smart grids. With modern day emphasis on climate changes and increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions, we must find ways to have most of our power generated from renewable resources. The problem with renewable sources of energy are that they are unpredictable, which makes production of energy periodical and sometimes even chaotic. With renewable sources, there can be power outages or too much power generation which needs to be controlled. Smart storage, also known as Intelligent Energy Storage(IES) can effectively handle these disrupt changes in power supply.

Solar Power, Great For The Environment? Or Is It The Last Thing We Need?

Article | February 10, 2020

Solar power is an undeniably a green, renewable form of electricity generation - but many organisations with questionable motives (even here in New Zealand) are trying to persuade the public (and Government – hi lobbyists!) that solar power isn’t that environmentally friendly, and that it's even harmful. At the expense of bullish corporate profits, solar power is often thrown under the bus. This article lists the facts - putting an end to the negative spin on solar so often found in the media. When solar panels produce power, they do not; create any air pollution, use zero water, create carbon emissions, noise pollution, and they won’t disturb surrounding ecosystems. Solar power is a renewable energy source, the sun’s rays are infinite, fill your boots.

Is nuclear power the energy of the future?

Article | March 11, 2020

It’s been nine years to the day since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster: one of the worst nuclear accidents in history. This brings up memories of Chernobyl and other nuclear accidents that have played a part in the opposition to nuclear energy. However, there is still a debate on the merits and drawbacks. There are those who see it as a path forward to getting off of fossil fuels while others maintain that not only does nuclear energy pollute, but other risks are taken by developing this type of energy. This debate has been going on for decades since the birth of the atomic bomb. Yet, due to the threat of climate change, is nuclear power a viable option moving forward?
