Clean Energy Regulator Wants To Change (Some) Solar Postcode Zones

| June 19, 2019

Australia’s Clean Energy Regulator is requesting feedback on its proposed changes to solar postcode zones, which will impact the amount of solar rebate available in some locations. Australia’s major solar subsidy, also known as the “solar rebate” is based on Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which have a value. The number of STCs a solar power system is eligible for depends on the size of the system and the location of its installation. For the purpose of issuing STCs, locations are allocated a zone (1-4) based on their solar radiation levels, which is accompanied by a rating on which the calculation is based. The Regulator says it wants to revise postcode zones to align with changes to postcode boundaries, which can occur due to issues such as changes in electoral boundaries or in population density. “All changes are to best represent the solar radiation for the specified zone,” states the Regulator in a draft explanatory document.

The Digital Transformation of Wind Energy

Article | March 16, 2020

Transformation and how it is changing the world around us at an accelerated pace. We started the conversation with highlights on The Digital Transformation of Smart Facilities and The Digital Transformation of Smart Process Industries and examined the impact of digital transformation being seen in both the Foodservice and Process Industries. In the final installment our new video series, which features the Presidents of each mCloud line of business, we chat with Dave Weinerth (President, Smart Energy) on how digital transformation is impacting the wind industry. The wind industry, in regards to how they see digital transformation is really interesting. Wind turbines are in hard environments, they’re complex machines that spin-off a lot of data into hundreds of different channels and operators are just now getting a chance to delve into what can be done with that data with some of the tools that are available in the cloud, through artificial intelligence and additional sensors that they may want to put onto their machines to assess different aspects of performance.

Coronavirus’ effect on the renewable energy sector

Article | March 12, 2020

Both renewable power projects and conventional energy operations have felt the constriction of global supply chains, which are currently being limited in a global effort to fight and contain the spread of the virus. Many manufacturers of wind turbines and their critical components are based in Asia, such as Goldwind in China, as well as producers of photovoltaic panels and batteries (particularly lithium). Market reticence about bringing in products from affected areas has seen significant constriction in the importation of these materials and parts - the price of batteries has dropped by 60%, owing to the industry’s concentration in Asia.

What the Renewables Industry Wants From the Next Stimulus Bill

Article | April 1, 2020

The U.S. renewables industry was left out of the $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill passed last week, but the battle is far from over. Congress is already considering further legislation to rescue the economy from the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and renewable energy groups are ready to bring their proposals back to the table. As with the last stimulus bill, the industry's plans center on securing changes to two federal policies: the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for solar power and the Production Tax Credit (PTC) for wind power. Renewables groups have a powerful claim to make as they push for those changes: Unlike many of the industries seeking hundreds of billions of dollars in collective aid, the desired tweaks to the renewable tax credits would not add significantly to the federal government's costs.
