Dark Energy Survey Completes Six-Year Mission

N/A | January 9, 2019 | 99 views

Astronomers and cosmologists at Penn who are part of a global endeavor to catalog hundreds of millions of distant galaxies as part of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) are marking the end of six years of observations with the last image collection on Jan. 9. DES represents one of the most promising ongoing studies of dark energy. “It’s a project that’s working to answer one of the biggest mysteries in our universe,” says Bhuvnesh Jain, a professor in Penn’s Department of Physics & Astronomy. “These data help us connect questions of fundamental physics with astronomy and cosmology.”

A vision for renewable energy

Article | September 17, 2022

Right now, renewable energy makes up a very small part of the entire energy sector of Bangladesh. But as we move into the future, and concerns about the environment become too great to ignore, exploring cleaner and greener sources of energy becomes the need of the hour. Our economy is booming, and our population is growing, so it goes without saying that our energy requirements are immense. There is plenty of scientific evidence that burning fossil fuels indiscriminately is not sustainable in the long term, so we do need to up our game in looking at alternatives.

2020: The Year of Convergence in Corporate Renewables

Article | July 15, 2022

The rapid growth of corporate renewable procurement has been nothing short of a buyer-driven revolution in the United States’ electric sector. Almost 20 gigawatts (GWs) of corporate power purchasing agreements (PPAs) were completed in 2019 across the globe, up from 13 GWs of corporate PPAs in 2018 and triple the numbers from 2017.1,2 And the majority of this growth has come from the United States. Fortunately for those of us committed to renewable energy, we expect this trend to continue. But as should be expected in such a dynamic, buyer-driven sector, we are starting to see some noticeable shifts in the marketplace as it evolves and grows. I wanted to highlight some of the trends Constellation is watching for this year.

2020 Trends That Will Make Waves In The Energy Industry

Article | July 16, 2022

In the renewable world, energy is generated by weather and the amount of energy that can be produced depends on the current conditions. Energy storage can ensure a power supply is maintained when weather conditions are not optimal for generating energy. While energy storage products have already been introduced to all levels of the market there are several technology hurdles to overcome before energy storage will reach maximum potential. We believe there will be great advancements in 2020 on:

Solar Power, Great For The Environment? Or Is It The Last Thing We Need?

Article | February 10, 2020

Solar power is an undeniably a green, renewable form of electricity generation - but many organisations with questionable motives (even here in New Zealand) are trying to persuade the public (and Government – hi lobbyists!) that solar power isn’t that environmentally friendly, and that it's even harmful. At the expense of bullish corporate profits, solar power is often thrown under the bus. This article lists the facts - putting an end to the negative spin on solar so often found in the media. When solar panels produce power, they do not; create any air pollution, use zero water, create carbon emissions, noise pollution, and they won’t disturb surrounding ecosystems. Solar power is a renewable energy source, the sun’s rays are infinite, fill your boots.

Apex Signs Offtake Agreement with Meta for Huge Clean Energy Generation

Apex Clean Energy | January 31, 2023

On January 30, 2023, Apex Clean Energy signed an Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreement (EAPA) with Meta to generate total renewable energy in the Angelo Solar Project with a 195 MW facility, supporting the regional operations in Tom Green County (Texas). The Angelo Solar Project will generate around $31.7 million in tax revenue for the local community, approximately $22 million in landowner payments, and about 400 jobs during construction, with commercial operations expected in early 2024. The other earlier declared transactions would continue to manifest between Apex and Meta, like an 80 MW EAPA with Altavista Solar, 197 MW with Jayhawk Wind, 175 MW with Lincoln Land Wind, 200 MW with Aviator Wind East, and 225 MW with Great Pathfinder Wind, along with this agreement. President and CEO of Apex Clean Energy, Mark Goodwin, said, “The success of our company and our mission, to accelerate the shift to clean energy, relies on partnerships with first movers like Meta that have set ambitious standards driving the energy transition. He added, “As we advance our sixth project alongside Meta, this portfolio, now totaling more than a gigawatt, represents a diverse set of best-in-class wind and solar projects in markets across the United States.” (Source – Business Wire) Urvi Parekh, Head of Renewable Energy at Meta, said, “We appreciate Apex’s partnership in helping us bring a total of one gigawatt of new renewable energy to the grid across Texas, Virginia, Illinois, Kansas, and Iowa.” She added, “This new solar project will support our commitment to 100% renewable energy and will help bring jobs and investment to the local community.” (Source – Business Wire) About Apex Clean Energy Apex Clean Energy generates clean energy with a diverse portfolio of about 40 gigawatts. Form Energy and Xcel Energy Partners for Two Multi-day Energy Storage Projects

Form Energy, Inc | January 30, 2023

Form Energy, Inc., an American technology company developing and selling a new class of economic, multi-day energy storage systems, recently announced that it had signed definitive agreements to install its iron-air battery systems at two of Xcel Energy's retiring coal plant sites. The storage technology will enable Xcel Energy to incorporate more low-cost, renewable energy into its structure while maintaining reliability as it retires coal plants and transitions to a more renewable future in the coming years. The Sherburne County Generating Station, located in Becker, Minnesota, will receive a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh multi-day storage system from Xcel Energy-Minnesota. The Comanche Generating Station, based in Pueblo, Colorado, will also deploy a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh multi-day storage system provided by Xcel Energy-Colorado. Both projects are scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and depend on regulatory approvals from their respective states. Form Energy and Xcel Energy worked together on comprehensive modeling with FormwareTM, Form Energy's next-generation operational and investment modeling tool for power grids. This modeling aided Xcel Energy in validating how Form's multi-day storage will improve Xcel Energy's ability to integrate many renewable resources, such as wind, into its system reliably and cost-effectively. Furthermore, this analysis demonstrated that Form Energy's 100-hour iron-air battery technology would protect the grid from normal weather variability on a day-to-day basis, as well as extreme weather events such as severe winter storms and polar vortex events. Co-Founder and CEO of Form Energy, Mateo Jaramillo, shared, "Xcel Energy operates across some of the richest wind-resource areas in North America. We're very pleased to work with the Xcel Energy team to maximize use of its renewable generation by providing a technology solution that will ensure their customers benefit from reliable and cost-effective service year-round. This partnership highlights Xcel Energy's commitment to ensuring grid resiliency and reliability, energy security, and access to low-cost clean energy when and where it is needed – every day of the year." (Source – Business Wire) About Form Energy Headquartered in Somerville (Massachusetts), Form Energy is an energy storage manufacturing and technology company developing and implementing an innovative iron-air battery.
