While the epic East Coast Winter Storm Jonas was dumping feet of snow across New York, Washington, D.C., and beyond last January, an intrepid customer of ours snapped this photo showing two homes with SunPower® solar that were still producing some electricity despite blizzard conditions.

Why Renewable Energy is Important

Article | March 11, 2020

Renewable energy is here to stay. It’s becoming a much larger part of the United States’ total energy production, and it supports a more diverse energy network to give customers control over how their energy is produced. However, the importance behind this relatively new way to produce energy doesn’t stop there. Below are some of the most impactful areas renewable energy supports, specifically our infrastructure, economy, and environment, and how City Electric Supply is expanding into this growing market.

Unlocking the benefits of digital solar to accelerate the energy transition

Article | February 14, 2020

Since a successful energy transition must be renewable, efficient and smart, the digital transition and the energy transition should go hand-in-hand. Solar is the most distributed of all energy resources and thus solar solutions are a perfect match for digitalisation and the application of distributed ledger technologies such as blockchain. This is good news for Europe’s energy transition. Digitalisation and increasing electrification of the energy system enables to break the boundaries between key sectors such as industry, transport and buildings. This sectoral integration unlocks new sources of clean flexibility, and supports the increasing penetration of solar and renewables into the system.

These solar-charged electric vehicles could change the world

Article | March 25, 2020

With people working from home and generally staying in spring 2020, publications around the world have reported on a significant decrease in air pollution. Wouldn't it be great if we could keep emissions low, even after the threat of Covid-19 has dissipated? One company is trying to make that happen. Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that traffic and air pollution have plummeted as cities shut down due to the coronavirus. While there are no silver-linings to the COVID-19 pandemic, our response to this crisis shows that we are capable of abrupt changes when the situation necessitates them. Perhaps we can even reverse climate change. A key factor in bringing this change will be altering the way we commute. One company, Aptera Motors, is trying to make this happen with solar-charged electric vehicles.

What It Really Means When Google and Apple Say They Run on 100% Renewable Energy

Article | April 8, 2020

Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft — the five companies that arguably make up “big tech” — say they are either already powered by 100% renewable energy or are close to getting there. Together these companies own and operate more than a hundred data centers (each the size of multiple football fields), close to a thousand offices, and countless other buildings, making them some of the most power-hungry companies in the world. Given this, running on 100% renewable energy is a significant achievement. But there are plenty of critics who argue that these claims are misleading. Some say carbon offsets might do more to assuage guilt than they do to help the environment. To understand where these arguments come from, let’s start with the basics.
