GM invests in wind energy for Michigan operations

General Motors has been working to green up its operations for years now, and has been doing so with the help of renewable energy. The company has been investing in solar for well over a decade, and has recently been sourcing wind power in both the U.S. and Mexico. Currently, GM sources at least 20 percent of its global energy needs from renewables, with a target of 100 percent by 2050. This week, GM took another step toward that goal through a deal with DTE Energy to source 300,000 MWh of wind energy in Michigan.

Treasury Wine Estates To Install Thousands Of Solar Panels

The company behind famous Australian wine brands including Penfolds and Wolf Blass is embracing solar energy in a big way. ASX-listed Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) is one of the world’s largest wine companies and has an ambition to be the “world’s most admired premium wine company”. A powerful way to win consumer hearts, minds (and wallets) these days is to have a strong focus on sustainability. As part of its sustainability mission, wines in TWE’s portfolio will be produced using 100% renewable electricity by 2024. In a step towards this renewables goal in Australia, approximately 9,500 solar panels will be installed at Barossa Winery and Production Centre in South Australia, and Karadoc Winery in Victoria by the end of this year. Collectively, the solar panels will generate more than 5,500 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to supply the equivalent of 900 homes. Total capacity wasn’t mentioned, but given the annual output, I’d estimate it at around 3.75 MW.

RWE successful in New York Bight offshore lease auction in the U.S.

RWE Renewables, one of the globally leading companies in offshore wind announced its success in the New York Bight offshore lease auction in the U.S. Through the joint venture 'Bight Wind LLC', RWE secured area OCS-A 0539 with a winning bid of $1.1 billion. The awarded seabed has the potential to host 3 gigawatts (MW) of capacity, enough to power 1.1 million U.S. homes. The project is expected to be in operation toward the end of the decade. The auction consisted of six leases, a record in the U.S. for the most leases available in a single auction. Under the auction, format bidders were limited to winning one lease area only. A winning bid provides the rights to develop the lease area and to participate in upcoming New York state offtake auctions, the first of which is expected later this year. The Powering the Next Tomorrow plan is designed to ensure reliable, sustainable energy for I&M customers from a resilient grid using diverse generation sources. I&M is pleased to continue its responsible, systematic transition to cleaner generation sources while ensuring we will meet our customers' needs for safe, reliable energy long into the future. I&M is Powering the Next Tomorrow by harnessing energy from the sun and wind, while ensuring we continue to have the necessary resources to power the homes, businesses and factories we serve 24/7." Steve Baker, president and chief operating officer of I&M I&M's intentions are described in its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which provides a detailed analysis of future energy needs and how the company will meet those needs over the next 20 years. Though long-term plans are subject to revisions, I&M's near-term plans to add more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar by 2028 have a higher degree of certainty. The new clean resources are expected to generate enough energy to power 400,000 typical homes.
