Form Energy, Inc | January 30, 2023
Form Energy, Inc., an American technology company developing and selling a new class of economic, multi-day energy storage systems, recently announced that it had signed definitive agreements to install its iron-air battery systems at two of Xcel Energy's retiring coal plant sites. The storage technology will enable Xcel Energy to incorporate more low-cost, renewable energy into its structure while maintaining reliability as it retires coal plants and transitions to a more renewable future in the coming years.
The Sherburne County Generating Station, located in Becker, Minnesota, will receive a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh multi-day storage system from Xcel Energy-Minnesota. The Comanche Generating Station, based in Pueblo, Colorado, will also deploy a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh multi-day storage system provided by Xcel Energy-Colorado. Both projects are scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and depend on regulatory approvals from their respective states.
Form Energy and Xcel Energy worked together on comprehensive modeling with FormwareTM, Form Energy's next-generation operational and investment modeling tool for power grids. This modeling aided Xcel Energy in validating how Form's multi-day storage will improve Xcel Energy's ability to integrate many renewable resources, such as wind, into its system reliably and cost-effectively. Furthermore, this analysis demonstrated that Form Energy's 100-hour iron-air battery technology would protect the grid from normal weather variability on a day-to-day basis, as well as extreme weather events such as severe winter storms and polar vortex events.
Co-Founder and CEO of Form Energy, Mateo Jaramillo, shared, "Xcel Energy operates across some of the richest wind-resource areas in North America. We're very pleased to work with the Xcel Energy team to maximize use of its renewable generation by providing a technology solution that will ensure their customers benefit from reliable and cost-effective service year-round. This partnership highlights Xcel Energy's commitment to ensuring grid resiliency and reliability, energy security, and access to low-cost clean energy when and where it is needed – every day of the year."

FlexGen | January 19, 2023
On January 17, 2023, FlexGen Power Systems, Inc., a top battery energy storage solution and software technology provider, announced its selection for providing energy storage software and technology for 420MW of energy storage across four locations in California to Middle River Power. The energy storage projects are located along the current simple cycle natural gas peaking plants and will have interconnected facilities.
Collocation of the natural gas peaking facilities with battery storage will significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining reliable and flexible reserve capacity. The battery facilities will be utilized to store excess carbon-free power during the day and discharge it in the evening when it is most needed, improving the use of these valuable renewable resources and providing critical ancillary services to the market. Additionally, the gas turbines will dispatch significantly less frequently than they do currently, which will result in reduced emissions, and it will continue to be available even in challenging circumstances.
FlexGen is committed to providing its customers with best-in-class service and performance to its customers who are seeking to ensure safety, resilience, and reliability in any setting where it operates. FlexGen's top HybridOS energy management system platform provides the full stack of energy storage value, which includes capacity, ancillary services, and energy market trading. The Middle River Power projects add to Flexgen's fast-growing fleet of energy storage assets, which are in use throughout the US with Investor-Owned Utilities, Independent Power Producers, and Municipal and Cooperative Utilities.
Mark Kubow, President of Middle River Power, said, "We're thrilled to work with FlexGen to bring these innovative projects to fruition, integrating additional renewable energy while enhancing a resilient grid. The energy storage assets store abundant solar energy in the middle of the day then deploy that energy to the grid during evening peak hours, while maintaining our natural gas facilities as a flexible, reliable backstop." He added, "We are excited to introduce our first tranche of projects that takes such a meaningful step in helping California in the transition to more renewable resources."

JERA Americas | January 02, 2023
JERA Americas, a subsidiary of the global energy pioneer JERA headquartered in Houston, has made headway in its efforts to promote the transition to a cleaner energy economy.
Canal and Bucksport Generating Facilities Acquisition
JERA Americas has recently announced the acquisition of a thermal power portfolio in New England totaling 1,633 megawatts (MW): Canal 1 (566 MW), Canal 2 (559 MW), and Canal 3 (333 MW) in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and Bucksport (175 MW) in Bucksport, Maine.Due to its location on Cape Cod, the town of Canal can serve as a crucial location for utilizing existing infrastructure to enable offshore wind power. Bucksport, with its current transmission interconnection, can potentially serve as a connection point for renewables to the electric grid.
Zenobē Battery Projects MOU
JERA Americas has announced entering into a partnership with a global leader in electric vehicle fleets and battery storage, Zenob, to create battery storage projects. The organization will collaborate on the development of utility-scale, standalone, grid-connected, and hybrid battery storage facilities in New England and New York to support the uptake of renewable energy. The companies will also seek out other prospects in the United States, such as the co-location of battery storage and renewable energy technology and the acquisition of battery development establishments.
JERA America’s Progress Towards its Objective
JERA Americas and its parent business, JERA, intend to attain net zero CO2 emissions energy by 2050 and have increased their efforts in that direction. JERA Americas has made significant progress in constructing a 300 MW wind power project in Texas and launched hydrogen blending projects at natural gas production facilities in the northeastern United States over the past year.
Additionally, the company revealed that it is partnering with ConocoPhillips on a proposed plant on the Gulf Coast of the United States. The factory, if built, would produce hydrogen and convert it to ammonia. JERA and Uniper may be prospective long-term clients. The planned project's objective would be to expedite the production and distribution of low-carbon fuels for domestic and worldwide consumption.
