Campbell Enters Into Renewable Energy Agreement With Enel North America to Advance Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets

Campbell Enters Into Renewable Energy
Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) and Enel North America  announced a 12-year virtual renewable power purchase agreement, supporting Campbell’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through the agreement Campbell will purchase the electricity and the associated renewable energy credits from a 115 megawatt share of Enel’s Seven Cowboy wind project in Oklahoma. The contract is expected to commence in July 2023.

“Improving the sustainability of the agriculture and food value chain is important to Campbell,” said Stewart Lindsay, Campbell’s Vice President, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. “Reducing emissions is a key part of this work, and the agreement with Enel North America provides a significant step forward in meeting our science-based emissions targets.”

The renewable energy credits retained through the agreement will reduce Campbell’s Scope 2 GHG emissions, enabling the company to make substantial progress toward achieving its science-based target to reduce its combined Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 42% by fiscal year 2030. Using expected production from Campbell’s portion of the wind project, the renewable electricity is estimated to avoid approximately 191,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions every year, or the equivalent of approximately 29% of Campbell’s fiscal year 2021 combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Located southwest of Oklahoma City, the Seven Cowboy wind project will have 107 turbines that are expected to generate over 1.3 terawatt hours of energy each year, equivalent to the electricity needs of over 120,000 U.S. households.

Merits of Using Methanol-powered Fuel Cells Advent Technologies’ methanol-powered fuel cells may prove to be a game-changer. Form Energy and Xcel Energy Partners for Two Multi-day Energy Storage Projects

Form Energy, Inc., an American technology company developing and selling a new class of economic, multi-day energy storage systems, recently announced that it had signed definitive agreements to install its iron-air battery systems at two of Xcel Energy's retiring coal plant sites. The storage technology will enable Xcel Energy to incorporate more low-cost, renewable energy into its structure while maintaining reliability as it retires coal plants and transitions to a more renewable future in the coming years. The Sherburne County Generating Station, located in Becker, Minnesota, will receive a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh multi-day storage system from Xcel Energy-Minnesota. The Comanche Generating Station, based in Pueblo, Colorado, will also deploy a 10 MW / 1,000 MWh multi-day storage system provided by Xcel Energy-Colorado. Both projects are scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and depend on regulatory approvals from their respective states. Form Energy and Xcel Energy worked together on comprehensive modeling with FormwareTM, Form Energy's next-generation operational and investment modeling tool for power grids. This modeling aided Xcel Energy in validating how Form's multi-day storage will improve Xcel Energy's ability to integrate many renewable resources, such as wind, into its system reliably and cost-effectively. Holcim US to achieve 40% wind and solar renewable energy across operations in 2023

Holcim US, the green building materials leader, has entered into its first virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) linked to renewable energy generation. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) VPPA means that at least 38% of our total power consumption at all of our production facilities in Texas is now from wind generation. The agreement complements our ongoing investment in on-site renewable energy generation, participation in community solar farms and significant gains from electrical efficiency investments. The renewable energy is generated from a large wind farm in Coke County, Texas. The generation from this contract is equivalent to reducing 143,739,000lbs of CO2 annually. Through wind and solar contracts on the horizon, Holcim US is set to avoid an estimated 5,000,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions through the terms of the contracts. The equivalent to 12.5 billion miles driven by gasoline powered cars or 5.5 billion pounds of coal burned. Additionally, Holcim US generates on-site renewable energy in Paulding, Ohio with three wind turbines generating up to 4.5 MW of power and in Hagerstown, Maryland with a 10 MW solar array, which reduces CO2 emissions by 28,000,000lbs of C02 annually. In addition, a total of 68 MW of solar arrays are under contract in Colorado, Michigan and Arkansas, along with a 40 MW battery storage system in Colorado.
