Gazelle Wind Power Confirms
Gazelle Wind Power (Gazelle), the developer of a hybrid modular floating offshore wind platform, has received the results of its basin model tests at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute - University of Cantabria (IHCantabria) facilities in Spain. The test report, witnessed by international certification organization DNV and Safier Ingenierie, verified the feasibility of the Gazelle platform’s concept in a wide range of conditions. A prototype model of Gazelle’s platform was analysed through a variety of assessments including surge and yaw excitation tests, wind alone tests, wave alone tests, decay tests, and more.

“The test serves to further validate our technology—which is key to ultimately reaching commercialization and unlocking the full potential of offshore wind, These tests show that our platform will serve as a vital piece of the energy transition that will center around decarbonisation, independence, and security.”

-Gazelle CTO Jason Wormald.

The main results from the tests were based on the 10 MW floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT). The tests confirmed Gazelle’s main principles—including the main physical principles behind the Gazelle platform design. The tests also reaffirmed that the Gazelle platform has significantly reduced pitch motions even in extreme sea conditions. The data collected from the various tests will be used to create a benchmarking database which will be the basis of the next phase of the design loop in conjunction with Safier Ingenierie.

Having recently named Jason to lead Gazelle’s technology and engineering teams, Gazelle has now taken a critical leap forward toward deploying its unique offshore floating wind platform that—through modularity, scalability, and ability to be mass produced—can unlock the massive opportunity in floating offshore wind market, which has a total addressable market worth approximately €750 billion by 2050 according to DNV.

Amazon makes its first investment in direct air capture technology to combat climate change. Amazon commits to purchasing 250,000 metric tons of carbon removal over a decade from 1PointFive's STRATOS DAC plant. The Climate Pledge Fund also invests in CarbonCapture Inc., known for modular DAC systems designed for cost-effective CO2 removal. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes the need for DAC and other solutions to remove 1 trillion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. On September 12, 2023, Amazon announced its first investment in direct air capture (DAC), a crucial technology in the battle against climate change. This development aligns with Amazon's Climate Pledge commitment, which aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. To advance this endeavor, Amazon is supporting the most extensive DAC technology deployment globally. The company has committed to purchasing 250,000 metric tons of carbon removal over a decade from the STRATOS project, 1PointFive's inaugural DAC facility. This quantity is equivalent to the natural carbon storage in over 290,000 acres of U.S. forests, approximately half the size of Rhode Island. The captured carbon will be securely stored underground in saline aquifers, large geological rock formations saturated with saltwater. In addition to this investment, Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund is contributing to CarbonCapture Inc., a climate tech firm renowned for its groundbreaking modular DAC systems. These systems are designed for seamless upgrades with cutting-edge sorbents that extract carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. This adaptability facilitates cost reductions driven by rapid advancements in material science. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underscores the need to remove approximately 1 trillion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere in this century to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Achieving this objective necessitates organizations evolving their operations by deploying emission-reducing technologies and capturing already-emitted CO2. While restoring natural ecosystems plays a significant role, technological solutions like DAC are essential for capturing and removing substantial volumes of CO2 from the air. DAC technology involves filtering CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it underground or utilizing it to create construction materials such as concrete, bricks, and cement. These new investments will make DAC a key component of Amazon's broader sustainability strategy, which also encompasses nature-based solutions such as forest conservation and restoration. Facilitating one of the largest DAC Purchase Agreements 1PointFive is currently constructing the world's largest DAC facility in Ector County, Texas. Once fully operational, it is expected to capture up to 500,000 tons of CO2 annually. The plant will harness Amazon Web Services (AWS) digital infrastructure for real-time performance analysis and operational optimization, thus enabling the firm to implement the learnings in future DAC facilities. This partnership with Amazon represents one of the largest purchase agreements ever for a DAC facility. Expediting the commercial deployment of DAC CarbonCapture, a climate tech startup, focuses on expediting innovation and scalability within the DAC industry. Their patented modular open system architecture enables new sorbents, an essential component responsible for CO2 filtration, to be swapped in as they become available. Maximizing sorbent performance is a central strategy in reducing DAC costs over time. Furthermore, besides Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund investment, CarbonCapture is providing up to 100,000 tons of carbon removal credits to Amazon, intended for use by Amazon and its business partners, suppliers, and customers. Amazon initiated the Climate Pledge in 2019, committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement's timeline. Over 400 companies, including Best Buy, IBM, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Siemens, Unilever, Verizon, and Visa, have since joined this initiative. Amazon continues to transform its transportation network towards sustainability by electrifying its delivery fleet and seeking alternative fuels. Presently, over 9,000 electric delivery vehicles from Amazon's global fleet are delivering countless packages worldwide. Since 2015, packaging initiatives have reduced average packaging per shipment by 41%, eliminating the need for over 2 million tons of packaging materials. Additionally, the company is investing $2 billion in developing decarbonizing services and solutions through the Climate Pledge Fund, which currently supports 23 companies and startups across five countries.

Catalyze Brings Sheep Creek Community Solar Farm Online, One of the First Community Solar Projects in Southern California

Businesswire | August 03, 2023

Catalyze, a clean energy transition company that finances, builds, owns, and operates solar, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging systems for commercial and industrial customers, today held a ribbon cutting to commemorate the launch of the Sheep Creek Community Solar Farm in Adelanto, California. This project marks the first under California’s Enhanced Community Renewables (ECR) program to be contracted by one of the state’s three investor-owned utilities, Southern California Edison (SCE). As one of the first community solar farms in Southern California, Sheep Creek Community Solar Farm is designed to generate clean energy for both residential and commercial accounts. There are currently 241 subscribers. The 3.8 MWdc project, developed and managed by Catalyze and Ampion, a leading community solar subscription and revenue management company, will expand access to solar energy for customers who do not own their property, are not able to pay the upfront cost of solar installation, or have a roof that is in poor condition or shaded. The project will support SCE’s efforts to comply with California's Green Tariff Shared Renewables program, requiring the state’s investor-owned utilities to offer 100% solar energy options to their customers. “Community solar plays a key role in ensuring that participation in the clean energy transition is accessible to all,” said Jared Haines, CEO of Catalyze. “We couldn’t be prouder to develop the first front-of-the-meter community solar project that supports California’s ECR program. It is our hope that Sheep Creek can act as an example for other projects to follow statewide, and we can accelerate the execution of more community solar projects to help reach the goal of ensuring widespread availability of renewable energy.” California's ECR program, a component of the Green Tariff Shared Renewables program, gives utility customers the opportunity to receive 100% clean energy from the state’s largest utilities. Under the structure of the program, utility customers can subscribe to a portion of a community solar project. The customer pays for the amount of energy to which they are subscribed. The customer then receives a credit on their utility bill that reflects this amount of electricity produced by their share of the solar farm. This process is managed by Ampion, which handles subscriber acquisition and revenue management for the Sheep Creek site. "Community solar’s debut in the Southern California Edison territory marks a watershed moment for the state and the movement,” said Nate Owen, CEO of Ampion. “Since community solar projects have no upfront cost or installation needed for users, they are an excellent way for states to give their citizens access to renewable energy. With Ampion’s successful acquisition of both enterprise and residential customers, all energy generated from the site will be used by the community. We are thrilled to partner with Catalyze to expand community solar’s reach in California and look forward to continuing to help grow this critical market." The ECR program allows low-to-middle-income residents, who have traditionally been left out of the energy transition, to reduce their own carbon footprint and utility costs while alleviating stress on the power grid. Solar energy provided by the Sheep Creek project will add to California’s renewable energy supply portfolio and assist in reaching the state’s goal of 100% renewable energy use by 2045.
