HIF Global, an eFuels company, reached an agreement with Siemens Energy, allowing Siemens Energy to expand its electrolyzer manufacturing capacity more than its previously announced plans. Through this agreement, it will obtain a specific capacity of electrolyzers for the HIF Matagorda eFuels facility.

This agreement would make the HIF Matagorda eFuels facility the world-scale eFuels facility in Texas. It will aggregate approximately 1.8 gigawatts of capacity electrolyzers, annually supporting about 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen production. Both companies work in front-end engineering and design for about 1.8 GW of Silyzer 300 polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. These electrolyzers will utilize renewable energy to isolate hydrogen gas from water molecules, producing around 300,000 tonnes of hydrogen gas per year. The green hydrogen is combined with recycled carbon dioxide to produce carbon-neutral eFuels chemically similar to fuels. Without any modifications, these can support the existing engines. The products of the HIF Matagorda eFules facility, i.e., green hydrogen and eFuels, will convert about half a million cars to carbon neutral in 2027.

CEO of HIF Global, Cesar Norton Sacre said, "We face a time of incredible expansion in hydrogen production amid global supply chain challenges. The agreement with Siemens Energy allows for electrolyzer deliveries which could support the start of construction as early as the first part of 2024 for the HIF Matagorda eFuels Facility. We look forward to starting construction at the pioneering Texas green hydrogen and eFuels facility, with Siemens Energy's industry leading electrolyzer design and manufacturing strength."

SVP of Sustainable Energy Systems at Siemens Energy, Stefano Innocenzi said, "Hydrogen and powerto-X applications such as eFuels will play a key role in the energy transition. To ramp up this new industry, we need many projects, including large-scale ones, and investors and off-takers who are willing to make a promise for the future. These agreements give us planning certainty, creating the basis for ramping up the technology and the industry as a whole."

Aspen Power Acquires Community Solar Portfolio in Maine

businesswire | May 31, 2023

Aspen Power, a distributed generation platform with the mission of accelerating and democratizing decarbonization, announced today that it has acquired a portfolio of 15 ground-mounted community solar projects in Maine. The projects, ranging in size from 1.4 megawatts of direct current (MWdc) to 7 MWdc, total 37 MWdc and are located across the state, from the southern region through Bangor. One of the projects in Berwick, ME has already reached commercial operation, with a capacity of 2.36 MWdc solar generation and is expected to produce enough electricity to prevent nearly 2,200 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere every year. That is the equivalent of 4,500 barrels of oil consumed or 380 homes electricity use annually. The energy produced by all the projects will be used by community solar subscribers in the state and support Maine’s goal of achieving 80% renewable energy by 2030. “We are proud to be a part of Maine's renewable energy transition and are committed to providing clean and sustainable energy solutions to our communities,” said Dan Gulick, Senior Vice President, Aspen Power. “We believe that the acquisition of these solar projects is an important step towards achieving that goal, and we look forward to bringing all of them online to benefit the communities they serve.” “We are thrilled to have found a partner in Aspen Power who shares our vision for clean energy and sustainable communities. We look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition under their leadership,” said Clarke Fenner, the original developer of Aspen’s Maine portfolio and current CEO of Senergy Solar Development. Aspen Power recently acquired Safari Energy, significantly expanding the company's footprint in the commercial and industrial solar market. With the goal of reaching gigawatt scale by mid-decade, Aspen Power is committed to advancing the transition to a more sustainable energy future. About Aspen Power Aspen Power is a distributed energy generation platform with the dual mission of accelerating and democratizing decarbonization. Braya Renewable Fuels receives a $300 Million investment from Energy Capital Partners.

prnewswire | April 21, 2023

Braya Renewable Fuels ("Braya"), a Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada-based producer of low-emission renewable fuels, today announced a USD $300 million preferred equity investment from Energy Capital Partners ("ECP"), a leading energy transition focused investor in the electricity, clean energy, renewable and sustainable infrastructure sectors. The investment from ECP completes the financing for the conversion of Braya's Come-By-Chance refinery to renewable fuel operations, which processes and refines renewable feedstocks for renewable fuel production, and builds on Braya's recent agreement with ABO Wind for the joint development of green hydrogen production at the facility. The proposed multi-phased ABO Wind project will provide hydrogen for Braya's needs as well as green ammonia for global export. Combined, these fuels – renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen, and ammonia – will provide alternatives to fossil fuels and reduce the emissions associated with hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy transport, aviation and heavy industry. Once operational, the project will initially supply 18,000 barrels per day of low carbon renewable fuel with expansion plans to increase capacity and enhance production of sustainable aviation fuel. ECP joins Braya's current owners, Cresta Fund Management ("Cresta") and North Atlantic Refining Corp. ("NARC"), which is managed by Silverpeak. Dallas-based Cresta has been Braya's majority owner and controlling investor since 2021. NARC/Silverpeak, in addition to owning a minority stake in Braya, also owns and controls NARL Marketing, ensuring the continued supply of fuel to Newfoundland and Labrador as well as surrounding areas. "We are excited to join forces with ECP to drive innovation, scale production, and create long-term value for our investors and stakeholders," said Frank Almaraz, CEO of Braya. "This investment is a testament to the Braya team – in particular those on-the-ground in Newfoundland and Labrador – who have been working over the last 18 months to convert the Braya refinery to renewable fuel operations. This is an exciting time for Braya as it moves closer to completing the first phase of its multi-stage growth plans and commencing the production and sale of renewable fuel later this year." "We welcome ECP, a seasoned investor in the energy transition sector, to the Braya team," said Cresta's Managing Partner, Chris Rozzell. "This investment is a major step in positioning Braya to become one of the largest independently owned renewable fuel producers in the world." "We are pleased to partner with Braya and its existing owners and expand our exposure to renewable fuel infrastructure," said Rahman D'Argenio, a partner at ECP and a member of its Investment Committee. "Our investment in Braya is not only a reflection of our commitment to funding infrastructure crucial to the energy transition, but also of our conviction in the Company's strong management team, unique location and experienced operations staff. We look forward to supporting Braya as they capitalize on the significant long-term growth opportunities in the renewable fuels sector that will be required to decarbonize heavy transport, industry and aviation." Lazard acted as Braya's financial advisor in the transaction, and Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, McInnes Cooper and Sidley Austin LLP represented Braya. Latham & Watkins and Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP represented ECP. About Braya Renewable Fuels LP Headquartered in Come By Chance, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Braya Renewable Fuels LP, a refinery, aspires to become one of the largest renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel production facilities in the world. Its refinery is in the conversion project process. It employs employees from different countries, backgrounds and cultures for global business. Previously, it was known as North Atlantic Refinery (NARL). It was named 'Braya' after the two endangered artic-alpine flowering plant species, Long's Braya and Fernald's Braya, mostly found in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. These unique species adapt to the extreme climate conditions, and natural processes need to survive in the coastal limestone barrens of the Strait of Belle Isle.
