SoCalGas Releases Sustainability Strategy to Advance Company's Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Initiatives

SoCalGas | January 27, 2022

Southern California Gas Co. released its ASPIRE 2045 SoCalGas Sustainability Strategy, broadening its goals and benchmarks to be inclusive of environmental health, social equity, and wellbeing in the communities SoCalGas serves. The ASPIRE 2045 Sustainability Strategy highlights the value of setting measurable objectives and considering the positive impacts SoCalGas can have in its communities. Under the ASPIRE 2045 Sustainability Strategy, the energy company will take tangible steps towards a carbon neutral future, invest $50 million over five years into communities the company serves and work to advance racial and gender diversity in the workplace.

The strategy builds on the energy company's March 2021 goal to achieve net zero emissions in its operations and the energy it delivers by 2045. It also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and California's climate objectives. The strategy identifies five sustainability focus areas:

  • Accelerating the transition of clean energy
  • Protecting the climate and improving local air quality
  • Increasing clean energy access and affordability
  • Advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture
  • Achieving world-class safety

Each focus area has an overarching goal with specific strategies that are quantifiable and measurable, designed to provide transparency on SoCalGas' progress toward its sustainability goals. Examples include:

  • Investing $50 million in the diverse communities the company serves, including education and workforce investments over the next five years
  • Taking actions to grow representation of women in leadership roles and overall workforce by 2025
  • Taking actions to lead the utility industry in racial and ethnic diversity representation in leadership roles by 2025
  • Increasing SoCalGas total annual Disadvantaged Business Enterprise spend to 45% by 2025
  • Enhancing SoCalGas' damage prevention program to decrease the rate of third-party pipeline dig-in damages 40% by 2030

Our sustainability strategy puts our environmental, social, and governance goals into action and is built on our core values of doing the right thing, championing people, and shaping the future. This will be an evolving strategy that we intend to build upon and use to hold ourselves accountable. At SoCalGas, we are committed to a collective, collaborative transition to a more sustainable energy future and this strategy will help guide us on our path to achieve that goal."

Jawaad Malik, SoCalGas vice president of strategy and sustainability and chief environmental officer

A key part of SoCalGas' Sustainability Strategy is pursuing its climate objectives with an increased focus on the use of clean fuels like hydrogen and renewable natural gas. In October, SoCalGas shared its Clean Fuels Whitepaper, a comprehensive technical analysis that examines how to achieve California's carbon neutrality goals through a more integrated, reliable, and affordable energy system.

SoCalGas has a goal to achieve a collective and collaborative transition to a decarbonized future, using its resilient infrastructure, improving local air quality through existing and emerging technologies, and creating a culture of diversity, inclusion, and safety with training and innovation.

LyondellBasell Achieves Renewable Energy Milestone

LyondellBasell | August 01, 2022

LyondellBasell announced it has made another step forward in its journey to net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company signed two additional long-term renewable electricity power purchase agreements (PPA) with Buckeye Partners for a total of 165 megawatts (MW) to be sourced from Buckeye's solar farms currently under construction in north Texas. This announcement is another example of the progress LyondellBasell is making towards achieving its 2030 goal of procuring at least half, approximately five million megawatt hours (MWh) per year, of its current electricity consumption from renewable sources. This agreement is the fourth renewable energy PPA for LyondellBasell and comes just one month after the company announced PPAs with ENGIE North America for 100 MW and Buckeye for 116 MW. The four agreements represent a total of 381 MW of renewable energy, estimated to generate approximately 1,037,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean power annually. This is equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of over 96,000 American homes. "Infused in the work we do and products we make is our commitment to continually improve the quality of life and the environment, Renewable energy is an important step to achieving our GHG emission reduction goals on our journey to net-zero by 2050. Through their use in the production of wind turbines, solar panels and electric vehicles, our products are critical to the energy transition. Expanding our investment in wind and solar energy sources helps reduce the emissions associated with producing the vital products which make renewable energy possible." -Peter Vanacker, CEO of LyondellBasell. Buckeye Crown and Sol Solar Projects Buckeye's Crown and Sol solar projects are located in Falls County, Texas on adjacent sites and are expected to commence commercial operations in the third quarter of 2023. Each PPA term with LyondellBasell is for 15 years. The projects are estimated to generate over 400,000 MWh of clean power annually for LyondellBasell, equivalent to 152,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide or the yearly electricity consumption of nearly 37,000 average American homes. Decarbonizing electricity supply through the purchase of renewable electricity is important to meeting LyondellBasell's 2030 targets. The renewable energy source target is estimated to reduce approximately 1.5 million metric tons of greenhouse emissions from its scope 2 emissions annually. TotalEnergies and Veolia Partner to Build the Largest Solar System for a Desalination Plant in Oman

TotalEnergies | July 28, 2022

TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) (LSE:TTE) (NYSE:TTE) and Veolia have signed an agreement to start the construction of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) systems providing power for a desalination plant in Oman, in the city of Sur. The power plant will be located on the site of the Sharqiyah Desalination plant, which is a reference in Oman and in the gulf region, supplying drinking water to more than 600,000 inhabitants of the Sharqiyah region. This 17-megawatt peak (MWp) solar project will be the first of its kind to be installed in the region. It produces annually over 30,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green electricity, or more than a third of the desalination plant's daily consumption, enabling it to avoid close to 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions. This is in line with Oman’s National Energy Strategy to convert 30% of its electricity use to renewable sources by 2030. The plant will be equipped with more than 32,000 high-efficiency solar panels and will use an innovative East-West tracker system to increase energy production. It will cover an area of 130,000 square meters, equivalent to approximately 18 football pitches. “At Veolia, we are committed to bring the ecological transformation in the water sector for our clients and for our own assets. We’re happy to launch the construction of the solar plant on our desalination unit in the city of Sur, to be able to power it with the green electricity while drastically reducing its carbon footprint, As one of the key players of Oman’s water sector, Veolia is fully committed to supporting Oman’s Vision 2040 sustainability objectives for the Sultanate’s communities and industries and our solar project with TotalEnergies goes in this direction.” -Estelle Brachlianoff, Chief Executive Officer of Veolia This project is in line with our strategy to develop renewable energy in the Middle East and provide our customers with clean, reliable and affordable energy solutions. We are committed to helping Veolia decarbonize its operations, building on our strong track record of deploying renewable energy solutions at highly technical and complex sites. As a global multi-energy company, our goal is to contribute to the development of renewables in Oman and its region,” said Vincent Stoquart, Senior Vice President Renewables at TotalEnergies Veolia is deploying solutions to optimize the energy efficiency of its desalination activities, including its Sharqiyah Desalination plant.
