The Cerro Dominador concentrated solar power (CSP) project in Chile’s Atacama Desert hit a milestone this week when the receiver was raised and installed at the top of the tower. The 2,300-tonne solar receiver was assembled at the base of the tower, then placed inside the tower’s cavity and lifted to a height of 220 metres (721.8 ft) using 16 hydraulic jacks. The ascent rate did not go above 5 metres per hour due to safety requirements and technical complexities, the project company Cerro Dominador said in a press release. Cerro Dominador consists of a 100-MW photovoltaic (PV) component, in commercial operation since February 2018, 110 MW of CSP and 17.5 hours of storage in molten salts.
