Wind energy the key in drive to achieve renewable targets

The Irish government has helped to launch an advertising campaign that will highlight the “central” role of wind energy in tackling climate change. The Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) yesterday formally rolled out a national billboard campaign, which it said would focus on the role wind energy plays “in leading the move away from fossil fuels and towards renewable electricity”. The posters will appear on 45 billboards and bus shelters over the next two weeks across Ireland. David Connolly, chief executive of the IWEA, said that wind energy provided just under a third of the nation’s electricity last year. While this figure is an improvement on previous years, as the number of new wind farms grows, Dr Connolly said that it was still not enough.
