Google, NV Energy renewable deal, one of the largest, includes rare storage component

January 10, 2020 / Robert Walton

NV Energy has asked Nevada regulators for authority to procure 350 MW of solar generation and up to 280 MW of energy storage to serve a planned Google data center in Henderson. The internet giant started construction on the facility last July. The deal is a part of Google's work to source 100% of its energy needs from renewable generation; in September, the company announced 18 deals totaling 1.6 GW, which it said was the largest-ever corporate purchase of green energy. The agreement with NV Energy is one of the largest corporate solar purchases in the United States and analysts say the storage component is particularly interesting, due to its rarity. The solar generation could be new construction, or supplied by smaller projects in NV Energy's portfolio.
