Assessing Wind Energy Potential with the New Global Wind Atlas

The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), hosted this webinar on Assessing Wind Energy Potential with the New Global Wind Atlas. The webinar provided an overview, a demonstration and technical information about the newly released Global Wind Atlas—a new data set and suite of tools available via the IRENA Global Atlas platform that provides freely available very high-resolution worldwide wind data for the first time.Prior to the release of the Global Wind Atlas, wind data were only available at 10-kilometer resolution, which resulted in underestimations, increased risk and increased costs for wind energy developers. The Global Wind Atlas provides wind resource data at one-kilometer resolution. It was developed using microscale modelling to capture small scale wind variability, allowing for better estimates of the aggregated wind resources.

Planning and Operating a System in Transition to IBR – Engineers Unite!

The transition to renewable energy is underway. This transition can be viewed through many lenses. General population lenses (Climate change is happening. We don’t know what we need to do exactly, but we’re doing it too slow!), Political lenses (How do we satisfy enough of our voters, how do we take credit for the good changes, and distance ourselves from the problems?), Commercial lenses (how can we profit from the transition?), Engineering lenses (How do we do this at all, considering safety, reliability, cost, and technical limitations?), and others.

The challenges and the future of non-interconnected islands: lessons learnt for other islands and the mainland

Islands that are non-interconnected to the mainland (or to larger grids on other islands) face specific challenges for their decarbonisation that often limit the development of clean energy projects. Intermittency of renewable energies and seasonality due to tourism mean an additional level of complexity when planning and working towards islands independency from fossil fuels. However, the solutions and lessons-learnt from non-interconnected islands are relevant for islands connected to the mainland or (in current times) even to the mainland, with the urge to be independent from fossil fuels as fast as possible.

Exploring the Role of Solar+Storage in Grid Outages

CESA

The devastating 2017 hurricane season raised awareness of the importance of resilience in the face of natural disasters, particularly the widespread impact of extended power outages in Puerto Rico. But what exactly is energy resilience and how can resiliency be considered in our decision making processes? In this webinar, experts from the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) shared how they are approaching the topic of resiliency. The presenters gave an overview of the importance of considering energy resilience when planning and making investment decisions, followed by a discussion of how solar technology can be deployed to help mitigate outages. The webinar included a review of the findings detailed in a recent paper released by NREL and Clean Energy Group, Valuing the Resilience Provided by Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems, which illustrates the impact of valuing resilience on solar+storage system sizing.
