India's renewable energy industry is aggressively moving towards achieving the government's target of installing 175 GW capacity by 2021-22. Large-scale central and state allocations, fiscal and regulatory incentives, as well as execution support from the government through set-up of solar parks and green energy corridors are expected to drive future growth. However, aggressive bidding, payment delays and back-down of power have cast long shadows.

Over the last four years, the deployment of floating solar has grown more than a hundredfold, surpassing the milestone threshold of 1 GW in September 2018. Although the vast majority of deployments in floating solar are currently limited to Asia, the technology is starting to make waves in Europe as well with various multi-megawatt projects in the pipeline. With Sub-Saharan Africa having a combined economic growth forecast of 5%, the importance of meeting its energy and infrastructural needs cannot be overemphasised. In Nigeria, solar power systems are subtly but steadily enabling increased access to energy with the emergence of innovative business model like the pay-as-you go options and mini solar home systems but there are clearly many gaps able to be filled by enterprising business solutions.
