Nonimaging devices substantially outperform conventional imaging lenses and mirrors in these applications, approaching the theoretical (thermodynamic) limit. Nonimaging design methods usually involve solving ordinary or partial differential equations, calculating the flow lines of the ray bundles, coupling the edge rays of extended sources and targets or optimizing a multi-parameter merit function computed by ray-tracing techniques. While geometrically based, the design fundamentals have been extended to the diffraction limited and even sub-wavelength domain.

Corporate leaders face mounting pressure from investors, customers and regulators to decarbonise operations, assets and infrastructure. However, progress is slow; according to the Infrastructure Transition Monitor research, commissioned by Siemens and conducted by FT Longitude, only 30% of companies globally (out of 1,400 surveyed) reported significant advances in decarbonisation or electrification of core processes, and just 37% cited improvements in the energy efficiency of their buildings and facilities. Given that buildings alone contribute nearly 40% of energy-related carbon emissions, there is a large gap to be filled on the road to net zero. Economic crises and budget constraints, as well as a lack of standardisation and alignment on priorities, are challenging efforts to bring about swift and meaningful change. Innovation and collaboration are required to accelerate electrification and to ensure that infrastructure across grids, buildings and transportation is efficient and resilient enough to meet sustainable goals.
