Breakthrough Energy Ventures, National Grid Partners and NextEra Energy Invest in TS Conductor to Meet Demand for Greener Electricity

TS Conductor Corp., a pioneer in high-efficiency conductors for electricity grids, announced that Breakthrough Energy Ventures, National Grid Partners and a subsidiary of NextEra Energy have joined Talkot and Hervé Touati in its oversubscribed Series a financing, for a total $25 million in funding. The new capital will be used to build the company’s first state of the art manufacturing plant in the United States.

While the electricity generation segment of the energy industry has progressed to cleaner and more efficient solutions, the overhead conductor technology used by transmission and distribution grid operators has not materially changed since the emergence of Aluminum Core Steel Reinforced (ACSR) cables in 1908. ACSR still today represents over 95 percent of the utility cables deployed across the world.

According to Market Study Report, LLC, the global wires and cables market was estimated to represent $183 billion of sales in 2020, with an annual compounded growth rate anticipated to exceed 4 percent until 2028. Global investment in the power sector reached $780 billion in 2020 and was largely dominated by renewable power (48 percent) and electricity networks (32 percent) investments, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). While considerable, the IEA notes that current levels of renewable energy and energy efficiency investments still fall short of what is needed to maintain global temperatures well below a 2 ºC rise.

The UN climate targets create the need for new cable technologies that can reduce electricity network losses and accelerate the connection of wind and solar farms, which is one of the major bottlenecks of renewable energy expansion. Network losses amount to approximately 2000 TWh annually, or 6.7 times the electricity consumption of the U.K.

TS Conductor was founded in 2018 by Rulong Chen, James Huang and Jason Huang, based on James Huang’s patented conductor design. This new class of conductors is based on a unique combination of carbon composite and aluminum encapsulation of the composite core. The conductors can be installed with the same tools and operating procedures as ACSR cables. And they are compatible with industry standard field practice and can be used for:

  • Line reconductoring, allowing for the doubling of capacity of an existing line without having to change or retrofit any structures.
  • Energy efficiency upgrades, reducing technical line losses by half without having to change or retrofit any structures.
  • Insulation upgrades of distribution networks, reducing forest fire risks without having to change the poles or towers.
  • Building new lines with lower structure costs and/or better characteristics (in capacity, efficiency, insulation).

ACE Green Recycling To Roll Out Four New Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Facilities Worldwide

US-based recycling technology company, ACE Green Recycling (ACE) announces its plans to build and operate four new lithium-ion battery recycling facilities with a planned total annual capacity of over 30,000 tons. The four locations will tap into previously underserved recycling markets and provide regional markets with an emissions-free, carbon-neutral recycling solution to support the global adoption of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are currently employed in most of the world's portable electronic devices and electric vehicles, as well as potentially serving as grid energy storage solutions. ACE is currently planning for facilities in Thailand, India, and USA, with planned capacities of 10,000 tons between India and Thailand and 20,000 tons in the USA. Operations in India are expected to commence by the third quarter of 2022 with initial processing capacity of 1800 tons per year, while Thailand and USA would come online in 2023 with full operational capacity planned to be achieved across all facilities by 2025. ACE recently announced its flagship combined lead-acid and lithium-ion battery recycling park in Texas, USA. With the announcement of plans to simultaneously set-up facilities in Asia, ACE is working towards being a global player for Li-ion battery recycling. The company will be deploying its proprietary hydrometallurgical recycling process that combines a completely emissions-free, low temperature process with market-leading recovery rates in excess of 98%. OPAL and NextEra Energy Marketing Announce Plans to Build Minnesota's First Renewable Natural Gas Facility

OPAL Fuels LLC, a Fortistar portfolio company, and NextEra Energy Marketing, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC today announced plans to build the first landfill renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility in Minnesota. The project will be located at a landfill owned by Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG), a leader in the U.S. environmental services industry, and interconnect with a pipeline owned by Xcel Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: XEL), the leading electric and gas utility in the region. For many years, OPAL, which was previously known as Fortistar RNG and TruStar Energy, has collected and processed gas to generate electricity at the 255-acre Pine Bend Landfill in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. NextEra Energy Marketing will work with OPAL to replace the existing power generation facility with a new RNG production facility that will capture 3,200 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas and produce over 6 million gas gallon equivalents (GGE) of RNG per year. The Pine Bend RNG Project will create approximately 50 to 60 construction jobs. Once completed in the first quarter of 2022, the project will capture and convert landfill methane to produce approximately 2,140 dekatherms of RNG per day, which is enough to eliminate 43,900 metric tons of carbon and offset direct (scope 1) emissions from 400 heavy-duty (class 8) trucks every year. OPAL will operate and manage the RNG project, and clean renewable natural gas fuel will be dispensed to customers via OPAL's natural gas fueling stations. "Our agreement with NextEra Energy Marketing and Republic Services offers a tremendous economic and environmental opportunity for the State of Minnesota.
