Pattern Energy Completes Construction of Largest Single-Phase Renewable Energy Project in U.S. History

Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern Energy) announced it has completed construction and begun commercial operation of its suite of Western Spirit Wind power projects. Western Spirit Wind is comprised of four wind power facilities totaling more than 1,050 megawatts (MW) located in Guadalupe, Lincoln, and Torrance Counties in central New Mexico.

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich said, "The largest renewable energy project in American history is now up and running – right here in New Mexico. Western Spirit encompasses four new utility-scale wind sites that connect rural communities in central New Mexico to local customers and other major energy markets beyond our state's borders. Western Spirit Wind is a groundbreaking megaproject that demonstrates large-scale renewables can be developed and built in the United States. These projects create significant job opportunities and local economic investments. Western Spirit brought over 1,100 construction jobs to New Mexico, generated local spending, tax revenue and landowner payments in a remote area of New Mexico, and is now delivering enough renewable energy to meet the electricity needs of more than 900,000 Americans. The four wind power facilities that comprise Western Spirit Wind utilize a total of 377 GE wind turbines ranging from 2.3 to 2.8 MW in size. The GE turbines utilize various tower heights to optimize the wind capture at each facility.

Western Spirit Wind was developed by Pattern Energy. Blattner Energy served as the construction contractor for the Western Spirit Wind projects.

The wind project and accompanying transmission line involved more than 1,100 workers on-site during the 15-month construction period, including heavy equipment operators, electricians, laborers, and others. Going forward, more than 50 workers will operate and maintain the Western Spirit Wind facilities in New Mexico.

Western Spirit Wind will have far-reaching economic benefits for the local area and is projected to provide an estimated $3 million per year for the three counties and two school districts in the project area. Stable, long-term funding directly contributes to improved quality of education, services, roads and first responder capabilities for the entire community.

Western Spirit Wind will provide clean, renewable energy to California and New Mexico through long-term power purchase agreements with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, San José Clean Energy, East Bay Community Energy, California Choice Energy Authority and member cities, and international energy company Uniper Global Commodities. Western Spirit Wind will also provide power to New Mexico municipalities, including Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities, through the Uniper Global Commodities power purchase agreement.

The wind power generated by Western Spirit Wind has a complementary generation profile to solar and typically delivers power around the clock. Western Spirit's wind power will provide resource diversification to western energy markets to help meet customer demand during the crucial early evening hours when demand is high but otherwise available renewable energy supply is typically low.

Last month, Pattern Energy and the New Mexico Renewable Energy Transmission Authority (RETA) announced the completion of the Western Spirit Transmission line, enabling the suite of Western Spirit Wind projects to be connected to the grid. The 155-mile 345 kV transmission line, developed jointly by Pattern Energy and RETA, is delivering wind power from Western Spirit Wind in central New Mexico to the electric grid managed by Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) near Albuquerque. PNM owns and will operate the transmission line.

Zendure Welcomes Jim Haflinger as Chief Technical Advisor

Breaking Down 5 Misconceptions to Accelerate Green Development

Huawei hosted its Day0 Forum "Lighting up the Future" as part of their lead up to MWC22 Barcelona. Huawei Carrier's Chief Marketing Officer Dr. Philip Song delivered a keynote speech titled "Five Misconceptions of Green Development" at the forum. Green development is a buzzword. Just like from Newton's classical mechanics to Einstein's theory of relativity, its development is going to be marked by a spiraling path between misconceptions and truths. We need to move past these five misconceptions as soon as possible to accelerate the green development of the ICT industry." Dr. Philip Song,Huawei Carrier's Chief Marketing Officer Misconception 1: ICT industry contributes to increased carbon emission. According to the GeSI's SMARTer2030 report, the ICT industry is only expected to account for 1.97% of global carbon emissions by 2030. More importantly though, other industries are expected to reduce their own carbon emissions 20% by applying ICT technologies, a total amount 10 times the carbon emissions of the ICT industry itself. These secondary savings are called carbon handprint. The size of this carbon handprint has made ICT infrastructure increasingly important in many national strategies. Huawei itself predicts that 1 YB of global data will be stored on the cloud by 2030. This means that 150 million tons of carbon emissions can be saved each year if current infrastructure is equipped with greener, all-optical transmission technologies. These savings would be equivalent to planting 200 million trees – an amount that would cover the entirety of Europe in forest. Misconception 2: There is over-focusing on supply chain emissions, which are regarded as the largest cause of carbon emissions for network equipment. As Dr. Song described in his presentation, if you look at the entire life cycle of network equipment, only 2% of its carbon emissions are generated during manufacturing, while 80-95% are generated during usage. Dr. Song therefore proposed that the key to reducing ICT industry carbon emissions will be adopting innovative technologies to improve energy efficiency. Misconception 3: Green development is only about green energy. While the development of solar and wind power are important to green development in the ICT industry, huge gains can be achieved by systematically improving the energy efficiency of telecom networks. To this end, Huawei released a three-layer green solution at this summit to systematically improve network energy efficiency through "Green Site, Green Network, and Green Operation", helping carriers achieve "More Bits, Less Watts". Misconception 4: Network energy efficiency is equal to the sum of energy efficiencies of its telecom equipment. The energy efficiency evaluation of a single equipment box is not enough to carry out comprehensive, scenario-based planning and construction decisions. Huawei recommended establishing a unified, standardized indicator system (NCI) to accurately evaluate and formulate energy-saving policies for entire networks by measuring the energy efficiency indicators of main communications equipment, site auxiliary equipment, transport networks, and data centers. Misconception 5: Energy saving should not impact any network performance indicator. The truth is, there is trade-off between energy saving features and some network indicators. However, energy saving features can be adopted at the expense of peak rates and some other indicators, but without impacting actual user experience. In Germany, an intelligent shutdown solution has been deployed in shopping malls at midnight. Although it slightly reduces peak rates, it reduces site energy consumption by 10% without affecting user experience. During his closing remarks, Dr. Song delivered five suggestions for green development in the ICT industry: "First, we should vigorously develop the ICT industry to enable green development in other industries. Second, we must pay more attention to carbon emissions of ICT infrastructure during usage rather than just during manufacturing. Third, the systematic solution of "Green Site, Green Network, and Green Operation" will help carriers continuously improve network capacity and reduce power consumption per bit, achieving "More Bits, Less Watts". Fourth, we must define a unified energy efficiency indicator system to identify the main problems of energy consumption. Fifth, watts are decided by user experience." The Redondo Beach City Council voted unanimously to approve the #PowerDownForGood campaign last week. The AES Redondo Beach power plant has been slated to close since 2010, when the state water board approved phasing out power plants that use ocean water to cool their operations. These power plants suck in ocean water and then drain the heated water back into the ocean, killing wildlife and damaging the local ecology. That's in addition to spewing smoke that diminishes air quality for residents and contributes to global warming. The AES Redondo Beach power plant was supposed to be shuttered on Dec. 31, 2020, but its closure has twice been postponed by state officials citing the threat of summer blackouts as the reason to keep the prehistoric plant on standby. Even AES has expressed a desire to shut down the plant if they are permitted by the state. "AES has recently announced they are committed to finally retiring the Redondo Beach power plant at the end of 2023, unless it's postponed again by state officials, Joining #PowerDownForGood is something we can all do to make a real difference in a concrete and measurable way to protect our environment, move towards a greener future, and save money at the same time." -Redondo Beach City Attorney Mike Webb.
