Renewable energy consumption and unemployment in South Africa

December 6, 2017

The importance of renewable energy consumption has grown to a large extent over recent years. The benefits of renewable energy consumption ranging from improved environmental quality to higher economic growth are well documented. However, the impact of renewable energy consumption on unemployment has received relatively less attention. This study examines the relationship between renewable energy consumption and unemployment in South Africa over the period 1990-2014. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was employed to test the long-run and short-run impacts of renewable energy consumption on unemployment.

RENEWABLE ENERGY OUTLOOK FOR ASEAN TOWARDS A REGIONAL ENERGY TRANSITION

whitePaper | September 30, 2022

The Southeast Asia region will see rapid economic growth in the coming decades and energy use is set to grow significantly. Today, the region stands at a crossroads. On the one hand, it can pursue a path of continued reliance on fossil fuels, most of which come from non-indigenous sources, increasing the region’s emissions and exposure to volatile and increasingly expensive global commodity markets. On the other, the region could utilise its ample, affordable, indigenous renewable energy resources to lower energy costs, reduce emissions and drive regional economic development. This second edition of the Renewable energy outlook for ASEAN was developed in collaboration the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE) and the ASEAN Renewable Energy Sub-sector Network. It is guided by IRENA’s World energy transitions outlook and builds upon the first Renewable energy outlook for ASEAN, released in 2016, by incorporating a net-zero pathway and a longer-term perspective to 2050.

Ecolabels and their role in mitigating climate change

whitePaper | October 11, 2022

The international type 1 ecolabelling schemes associated with the entire lifecycle of products and services had environmental and health attributes and has a significant role in mitigating climate change. Standards and criteria developed for ecolabels assist in setting the bar for manufactured products and services to limit greenhouse gas emissions and reduce climate change impacts. Climate change represents a continuing threat to humanity and the natural world. The current effects of anthropogenic climate change are far-reaching, from its effects on causing extreme weather to its impacts on natural ecosystems and human society

EV BATTERY CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

whitePaper | October 7, 2022

Automakers and their suppliers have always faced a host of challenges, and this decade is no exception. There is an urgent need for answers to several trends: the increased consumer demand for EVs, legislation for reduced emissions, and the rise in urbanization. In fact, consumers and policymakers alike are calling for more sustainable and more advanced vehicles that do not compromise on performance or safety. Just this year, an EY survey of 13 developed nations indicated that 41% of those intending to buy a new vehicle in the year ahead would choose a BEV (battery electric vehicle), HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle).

ELECTRIC VEHICLES SPOTTING THE CHALLENGES& CHARTING THE COURSE

whitePaper | October 23, 2022

Today we witness a significant push in the country to not just drive adoption and also become a world leader in production as we scale up our manufacturing facilities and localise supply chains. This presents a huge opportunity for the industry to support the nation’s drive to become an automobile hub. However, the industry witnesses its own set of unique challenges that need to be addressed on priority. We are in the middle of critical supply chain-induced shortages, especially with the limited availability of key components such as lithium-ion battery cells and semiconductor chips in recent times.
