Wind energy in Europe: Outlook to 2022

September 28, 2018

Over the next 5 years, European countries will (we hope) deliver on their 2020 renewable energy targets and will prepare they're 2030 National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP) outlining their renewables trajectories to 2030. Wind energy will play a key role over the period, allowing many European countries to continue decarbonizing their power systems in a cost-effective way and to continue the transformation of their energy systems.

Control Valve Solutions for Cleaner Hydrogen Energy

whitePaper | December 15, 2022

Hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth and is seen as the fuel of the future as it does not emit carbon dioxide. The hydrogen industry is experiencing tremendous growth with governments and private organizations investing their time and efforts in developing new technologies to produce and use hydrogen in power generation, transporation, and as feedstock in refineries and petrochemical plants.

Electric Utility Regulatory Frameworks and Financial Incentives

whitePaper | August 8, 2022

Electric utility regulatory frameworks and financial incentives can address barriers to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and distributed energy resources (DERs) that are inherent in traditional utility regulatory models. Legislatures and electric utility regulators (often called public utility commissions) in many states are refining or replacing traditional utility financial policies to encourage utility actions and programs aligned with state policy goals. These states are adopting regulatory frameworks and financial incentives including revenue decoupling, multi-year rate plans (MYRPs), performance-based regulation (PBR), and performance incentive mechanisms (PIMs).

Cumulative Effects Analysis for Wind Energy Development: Current Practices, Challenges, and Opportunities

whitePaper | April 12, 2022

The increasing global deployment of wind energy has given rise to concerns about potential adverse effects on certain wildlife species and habitats. The United States and European nations use environmental impact assessments (EIAs) to evaluate the environmental effects of wind energy and inform wind energy planning, siting, and operational processes. A key component of the EIA is the cumulative effects analysis/assessment (CEA). CEAs consider the effects of a proposed development in the context of past, present, and future developments, as well as other (non-wind) activities.

Leveraging advanced polyurethane resins and coatings to develop high-performance wind turbine blades

whitePaper | April 1, 2022

Covestro has applied its industrial expertise in high-tech polymer materials to develop innovative polyurethane (PU) solutions for wind turbine applications that offer performance benefits and lower blade costs. To evaluate the impact of our PU solutions for rotor blade applications, Covestro commissioned bewind GmbH, a specialist wind engineering consultancy company, to simulate the costs and benefits of these solutions in terms of production, operational performance, and turbine lifetime. The company evaluated three of our PU products: a pultrusion resin, an infusion resin, and coating raw materials for leading edge protection (LEP). The aim was to quantify the impact of Covestro polyurethane solutions compared to standard alternative products used on a typical offshore wind farm.

Electricity Resource Compensation Under a NetZero Future

whitePaper | September 15, 2022

Over the past decade, state governments, local municipalities, and large corporations have increased momentum for the adoption of net zero carbon policies, and with the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022 that will provide hundreds of billions of dollars of investment in clean energy, that net zero carbon future now looks more achievable. E3 has been at the forefront of analyzing possible decarbonization pathways across North America. While there are multiple potential pathways on the road to net zero, it will ultimately result in a fundamental shift over time from an era of dominated by fossil fuel generation resources to one dominated by renewables, energy storage, and demand-side resources. This will result in a major transformation in how electricity markets function.
