2019 renewable energy industry outlook

January 8, 2019

The fundamental drivers of renewable energy growth in 2018 are poised to continue in 2019, but we also see three trends coming into sharper focus that are likely to shape renewable growth in the coming year. In 2018, the US renewable energy sector remained remarkably resilient, gaining ground despite uncertainty about the effects of federal tax reform legislation and a spate of new import tariffs.

Securing the Energy Transition

whitePaper | January 12, 2023

Energy security and affordability present global challenges, but both are integral elements of a successful energy transition, alongside sustainability to mitigate climate change. The current energy crisis is driving inflation, slowing economic growth and contributing to social turmoil. Some choices made by countries in response to the crisis, such as improving energy efficiency and scaling renewables, will be beneficial for the wider energy transition. But other actions – including increased production of electricity from coal and broad-based consumption subsidies – put longterm energy transition imperatives at risk, while leaving those countries more vulnerable to future crises and putting global climate goals out of reach.

COMPETENCES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

whitePaper | September 15, 2022

When we talk about the green shift or new tech solutions for addressing climate change, we assume, hope, and proclaim engineers and other STEM professionals as the custodians of our smooth transition towards sustainability and net-zero emissions. But we are stuck in a paradox. On the one hand, politicians and industry are sounding the alarm about the catastrophic shortage of engineers, IT, and STEM talents to address the current and future challenges. On the other hand, it is unclear what concrete competences and skills the industry needs to drive the green shift. Squeezed in between are the higher education institutions, racing against time to adapt curricula to match the skills provision with the skills demand.

Solving the Energy Trilemma

whitePaper | August 11, 2022

The global climate change summit, COP26, in November last year emphasised the urgent need to keep 1.5 degrees Celsius alive, limit global warming and push for more low-carbon power, as well as renewables. Then prices for energy began to skyrocket in Europe and Asian markets in January due to post-COVID energy bottlenecks. Finally, the recent war in Ukraine has emboldened world leaders’ to prioritise energy security and question where their imported fuels come from.
