achieving 24/7 renewable energy by 2025

achieving 24/7 renewable energy
Peninsula Clean Energy is leading the charge to fight climate change by radically transforming the electricity sector. We have one of the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the world: Providing our 310,000 residential, commercial, and industrial
customers with renewable energy on an hourly basis by 2025. Over the last two years, we have built, tested, and leveraged a new 24/7 clean energy procurement modeling tool, MATCH (Matching Around-The-Clock Hourly energy), to
answer the critical questions: What is the optimal 24/7 renewable energy portfolio, how much will it cost, what are the emissions reduction benefits, and what are the impacts to the broader energy system?

NORTH CAROLINA: LEADING THE CHARGE TO A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE

whitePaper | December 31, 2022

North Carolina leads the United States in taking bold steps to address climate change and rising energy costs. Over the last two decades, the state has enacted a series of legislative, executive and regulatory actions to propel the state toward a clean energy future. These actions laid the foundation for landmark bipartisan climate legislation passed in 2021 known as House Bill 951 (HB 951) which requires North Carolina utilities to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Simultaneously, North Carolina has invested heavily in diversifying its energy resource mix to include increased amounts of renewable energy sources. These investments have enabled North Carolina businesses to meet their sustainability goals while benefiting from some of the lowest energy costs in the country.

The Sustainable Data Center Transformation: Reducing Carbon Footprint with Liquid Immersion Cooling

whitePaper | May 19, 2022

Data centers leave a significant carbon footprint and, as the need for these mission critical facilities continues to surge, the current trajectory is toward increasing power use and greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions can contribute to extreme weather and put the health of our planet at risk. There is growing demand from both the public and industry to reduce the environmental impact of all businesses — sustainability has moved into the corporate domain and, due to regulations and the cost implications of reducing a carbon footprint, it can be a hot button issue.

Electricity Resource Compensation Under a NetZero Future

whitePaper | September 15, 2022

Over the past decade, state governments, local municipalities, and large corporations have increased momentum for the adoption of net zero carbon policies, and with the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022 that will provide hundreds of billions of dollars of investment in clean energy, that net zero carbon future now looks more achievable. E3 has been at the forefront of analyzing possible decarbonization pathways across North America. While there are multiple potential pathways on the road to net zero, it will ultimately result in a fundamental shift over time from an era of dominated by fossil fuel generation resources to one dominated by renewables, energy storage, and demand-side resources. This will result in a major transformation in how electricity markets function.

CPUs and Greenhouse Gases: Why Data Center Processor Selection Matters in Achieving Sustainability Goals

whitePaper | August 23, 2022

Data centers are major consumers of electricity, both for powering servers and keeping them cool. Despite the progress that large data center operators have made in improving efficiency, power demand is expected to continue to grow steadily for the foreseeable future. While hyperscale operators have made great strides in shifting to renewable energy sources, the reality is that fossil fuels generate 60% of U.S. electricity

Battery storage Stability for the energy transition

whitePaper | November 29, 2022

Renewables are expected to account for 80–90% of power generation globally by 2050. Due to their dependence on weather conditions, wind and solar power cannot provide constant baseload power during all hours of the day, and measures have to be taken to compensate for this intermittency. The good news is that such imbalances or fluctuations can be mitigated effectively using battery energy storage systems (BESSs).

Blockchain for Scaling Climate Action

whitePaper | April 15, 2023

The overall objectives of this paper are to 1) curate an evidence-based, balanced and research-driven narrative on the relationship between blockchain and climate action, 2) document examples and use cases of blockchain applications, and 3) offer recommendations to deepen connection and collaboration across current and emerging climate solutions and stakeholders.
