India’s Energy Transition

December 31, 2018

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independentthink tank championing sustainable solutions to 21st–century problems. Our mission is to promote human development and environmental sustainability. We do this through research, analysis and knowledge products that support sound policy-making. Our big-picture view allows us to address the root causes of some of the greatest challenges facing our planet today: ecological destruction, social exclusion, unfair laws and economic rules, a changing climate. IISD’s staff of over 120 people, plus over 50 associates and 100 consultants, come from across the globe and from many disciplines. Our work affects lives in nearly 100 countries. Part scientist, part strategist—IISD delivers the knowledge to act.

Special Report on Solar PV Global Supply Chains

whitePaper | August 25, 2022

Solar PV is a crucial pillar of clean energy transitions worldwide, underpinning efforts to reach international energy and climate goals. Over the last decade, the amount of solar PV deployed around the world has increased massively while its costs have declined drastically. Putting the world on a path to reaching net zero emissions requires solar PV to expand globally on an even greater scale, raising concerns about security of manufacturing supply for achieving such rapid growth rates – but also offering new opportunities for diversification.

CPUs and Greenhouse Gases: Why Data Center Processor Selection Matters in Achieving Sustainability Goals

whitePaper | August 23, 2022

Data centers are major consumers of electricity, both for powering servers and keeping them cool. Despite the progress that large data center operators have made in improving efficiency, power demand is expected to continue to grow steadily for the foreseeable future. While hyperscale operators have made great strides in shifting to renewable energy sources, the reality is that fossil fuels generate 60% of U.S. electricity

Grid-Forming Technology in Energy Systems Integration

whitePaper | March 17, 2022

As rising numbers of inverter-based resources (IBRs) are deployed in power systems around the world, their role on the grid is changing and the services needed from them have evolved. In order to maintain grid stability and reliability, IBRs need to provide some of the services currently (or formerly) provided by synchronous generators. Interconnection standards already include requirements for IBRs to have the capability to provide some of these services—such as frequency and voltage support—and the procurement and deployment of the services can be implemented either as mandatory interconnection requirements or as market products
