Onsite Major Component Replacement Technologies for Floating Offshore Wind: the Status of the Industry

February 12, 2023

Onsite Major Component Replacement
Amidst the rapid developments the floating offshore wind industry is experiencing, this white paper intends to build a preliminary classification of floating wind heavy maintenance concept types under development. Through a high-level comparative assessment of assigned crane families and an overarching discussion on strategy considerations, this white paper hopes to inform the decision processes of key stakeholders in the field. The findings from this work feed into the wider discussions of WFO’s Floating Offshore Wind Committee (FOWC), where the insurability and bankability perspective reflects on the challenges of floating wind and the new technologies that aim to solve them. These cross-discipline conversations remind us of the
need to balance cost reductions and safety measures to preserve the risk perception of floating wind technologies, especially for the first commercial-scale projects.

Renewable energy sources are making inroads in our national energy mix, and that progress is likely to continue. It’s not a matter of whether the renewable energy market will grow, it’s how fast and by how much.

Integrated Power Electronics: The Road Merges

whitePaper | December 14, 2022

As electric vehicles have rapidly matured, certain features that were never necessary for internal combustion engines have become critical to EVs’ operation: a power distribution unit; a battery disconnect unit; an electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) controller; a battery management system; an onboard charger; a DC-to-DC converter. The trend is reminiscent of the growth in internal combustion engines’ electrical/ electronic architectures, where each feature required an electronic control unit — a separate box that took up precious space within a vehicle chassis. Every box needed its own software, its own connectors and its own housings, all of which resulted in added complexity and cost.
