As electric vehicles have rapidly matured, certain features that were never necessary for internal combustion engines have become critical to EVs’ operation: a power distribution unit; a battery disconnect unit; an electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) controller; a battery management system; an onboard charger; a DC-to-DC converter. The trend is reminiscent of the growth in internal combustion engines’ electrical/ electronic architectures, where each feature required an electronic control unit — a separate box that took up precious space within a vehicle chassis. Every box needed its own software, its own connectors and its own housings, all of which resulted in added complexity and cost.

As the third decade of 21st century begins, the oil and gas industry faces opposition from a public greatly concerned with the environmental impact of fossil fuels, ever-more skeptical shareholders, and challenges from policy makers seeking to simultaneously meet decarbonization goals and expected oil and gas demand. Amidst a global energy transition, the demand, financial, and social future of oil and gas companies is increasingly in question.

The successful achievement of the objectives set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2015 Paris Agreement requires a rapid transformation of energy systems across the globe towards high shares and eventually 100% renewable energy. As a growing number of countries announce ambitious pledges and actions to phase out fossil fuels and enact policies in line with achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, renewable energy will need to play a dominant role across all sectors.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, renewable energy generation has been steadily increasing as energy produced by fossil fuels decreases. While this is great news for facility owners looking to invest in renewable energy, the current U.S. electrical grid cannot support this growth rate without significant updates to technology and energy storage. Our white paper tracks the current state of the U.S power grid and addresses the challenges facility owners face when investing in renewable energy.

By 2050, global energy usage is projected to increase by almost 50% compared to 2020. This includes an increase in energy consumption in the industrial sector.1 At the time of writing, in the first quarter of 2022, the cost of energy – oil, gas and electricity – is particularly high, which has led to significant extra energy costs for companies, and prices are expected to increase.

The effects of climate change on our lives and economies have become unavoidably apparent. In 2021, the third assessment report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) observed increased warming of the Earth’s surface caused primarily by human activity, with projected increases to rising sea levels and the frequency of heat waves.
