Offshore wind operational report

December 31, 2017

Welcome to our 2017 Offshore Wind Operational Report, an annual publication summarising progress in the development of the UK’s offshore wind resources. With 361 large offshore wind farms already contributing on average 6% of the nation’s electricity demand, the sector is on track to becoming a vital source of power generation for the country. As The Crown Estate, we manage the seabed around England, Wales, and Northern Ireland2 out to international borders. These waters harbor some of the best wind resources worldwide, alongside the infrastructure of ports, transmission grids, a diverse supply chain, and a skilled labor force.

Scaling up the American wind industry

whitePaper | January 16, 2023

With the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act (“IRA”) in August 2022, the United States signaled its commitment to reducing emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. The IRA’s reach extends across industries and, in particular, across energy technologies. Its primary achievement in the energy and climate space is the unprecedented provision of public incentives for clean energy deployment and manufacturing capacity. These incentives provide the necessary long-term certainty required by wind industry stakeholders to make large capital investments in the U.S. market, which will in turn create jobs and economic opportunities for communities across the country.

The Sustainable Data Center Transformation: Reducing Carbon Footprint with Liquid Immersion Cooling

whitePaper | May 19, 2022

Data centers leave a significant carbon footprint and, as the need for these mission critical facilities continues to surge, the current trajectory is toward increasing power use and greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions can contribute to extreme weather and put the health of our planet at risk. There is growing demand from both the public and industry to reduce the environmental impact of all businesses — sustainability has moved into the corporate domain and, due to regulations and the cost implications of reducing a carbon footprint, it can be a hot button issue.

Delivering EU energy security through climate action

whitePaper | September 15, 2022

This report draws on insights and analysis by a number of experts to consider whether and how the EU would be able to deal with a full cut off from Russian gas supplies going into the winter of 2022 and out to 2025 without jeopardizing medium-term energy and climate targets. The report covers the nature of the EU’s security of supply challenge, an assessment of the levers which can address this challenge in the short- and mid-term, and recommendations on specific actions for European states to take.

Sustainable power grids

whitePaper | January 9, 2023

Stricter environmental and safety regulations, pressure to shift to green energy sources, and a retiring workforce all present significant challenges for today’s power grid operators. Transmission and distribution companies must create a more resilient, dynamic grid, capable of handling increased load and the complexity that distributed energy resources (DERs) will add. New digital tools that enable operators to collect and organize data can help transmission and distribution companies face these challenges by addressing three major imperatives.

Is the sun shining on new energy sources?

whitePaper | January 27, 2020

Although the European Union (EU) seems to be on track to meet this year’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target of 20% compared to 1990 levels, it is currently not projected to achieve the 2030 targets. In line with the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015, these targets relate to domestic GHG emissions, the share of renewable energy sources and energy efficiencyi . Hence, radical change is required and we all need to do our bit. With road transport accounting for approximately 20% of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions in the EU alone, the mobility sector can play an important role in helping to accomplish the environmental targets.
