As part of our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, Amazon is working to measure, reduce, and neutralize the emissions across every part of our business. For Amazon Devices, we are integrating carbon reduction strategies across the life cycle of our devices, including materials and manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life phases. This paper focuses on the use phase, which accounts for 10-15% of the overall carbon footprint of rechargeable battery-operated devices and 60-80% of the footprint of plugged-in devices. We believe this phase is an important area of focus, since consumer electronics will always require some amount of electricity to operate. As the world becomes more connected even beyond consumer electronics, we believe that connectivity in itself allows us to rethink how we approach use phase decarbonization for all connected devices.

As of October 2021, more than 250 companies have partnered with DOE in the Better Plants Program and Challenge. The Better Plants 2021 Progress Update reports that, to date, partners have saved more than $9 billion dollars and 1.9 quadrillion Btus of energy. Over 60 partners have met their initial energy reduction goals, and many have gone on to set new goals with the U.S Department of Energy. In 2021, twenty new companies joined the program, seven Better Plants partners achieved their energy intensity reduction goals and three partners that previously achieved their energy-intensity reduction goals repledged with new goals.

The current energy crisis is driving inflation, slowing economic growth and contributing to social turmoil. Some choices made by countries in response to the crisis, such as improving energy efficiency and scaling renewables, will be beneficial for the wider energy transition. But other actions – including increased production of electricity from coal and broad-based consumption subsidies – put longterm energy transition imperatives at risk, while leaving those countries more vulnerable to future crises and putting global climate goals out of reach.
